ExquAIro offers two types of grants: the Pilot Grants and the Impact Grants, both designed to advance medicine and science through AI. On this page, you’ll find more information about these grants: how to apply, how they’re funded, and how the evaluation process works.
Pilot Grants
Pilot Grants are intended for smaller-scale projects, offering funding between €50,000 and €75,000 for a period of up to two years. This grant enables participants to generate a pilot dataset and demonstrate that the AI application developed during the bootcamp is effective within their medical field. This could include developing a new diagnostic test or analyzing medical imaging data.
Funding for the Pilot Grants comes from the UMCG Support Fund exquAIro, a charitable fund housed within the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG). This fund enables exquAIro to support promising early-stage projects. The board members of the exquAIro Foundation also serve as board members of the support fund, ensuring a close alignment between the foundation’s vision and the allocation of resources. As a result, funding is strategically directed toward initiatives with strong potential for both medical and societal impact.

Impact Grants
Impact Grants are larger-scale grants of approximately €1 million. These are aimed at projects with the potential for significant impact on the medical field. Unlike the Pilot Grants, these are financed by external sources. ExquAIro supports participants in identifying and connecting with potential funders.
ExquAIro offers support not only during the training program but also afterward, with the goal of enabling lasting impact in healthcare.

How to Apply for an exquAIro Grant
The application process begins with successfully completing the exquAIro AI & Data Bootcamp. During the training, participants work on their grant proposal with guidance from experts in AI and funding applications. The bootcamp offers opportunities for both individual and group feedback on ideas and proposals. After completing the bootcamp, participants can formally submit their grant application to the exquAIro Foundation.

Evaluation Process
Applications are reviewed by an independent panel of internal (UMCG) and external international experts. Proposals are assessed based on three key criteria: the quality of the AI application, the uniqueness of the data, and the potential impact of the project. Based on these evaluations, applications are prioritized and grants are awarded accordingly.
