Accelerating Healthcare with AI: How exquAIro Traineeships Deliver Real Impact

In recent months, several master’s students have started a Science Traineeship at exquAIro, working on medical research with Artificial Intelligence (AI). These traineeships are available with researchers who have completed the exquAIro Biomedical AI Bootcamp. Two econometrics students have begun their master’s theses, one under Sven Mieog at Leiden UMC and one with Joost Groen at UMC Groningen. Additionally, Eugene Berizikov (Class 2) has a research trainee via Rewire, and the traineeship with Menno Douwes at the UMCG (Class 1) was recently successfully completed.

Having a Science Trainee on the team allows us to explore AI applications that can directly support our surgical research and ultimately patient care,” says Sven Mieog, oncologist and surgeon at Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC). “The trainee contributes to analyzing data, developing AI models, and testing methods that help us to more precisely predict patients at risk of infections after pancreatic surgery and to select the optimal treatment strategy to prevent these infectious complications. Their work accelerates research and brings practical benefits to patients, while also giving them hands-on experience in cutting-edge medical AI.”

Invaluable experience

During a Science Traineeship at exquAIro, students work on innovative research into early diagnostics and therapies for serious conditions such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, asthma & allergy, and metabolic disorders. They are guided by a clinical researcher from a University Medical Center (UMC) and, in addition to their master’s thesis, contribute to a scientific publication. While the traineeship is unpaid in line with the foundational character of exquAIro, it provides invaluable experience and the opportunity to make a real impact in medical science. Previous econometrics master’s theses have received top marks, ranging from 8.5 to 10.

A triple win between students, medical scientists and exquAIro

“Our Science Traineeships creates a triple win between talented econometrics/AI students, clinical scientist and biomedical researchers and exquAIro. The traineeships offer students a unique opportunity to work in the frontend of scientific medical research and a result make real impact for the health of people. Furthermore, it offers scientists of exquAIro the possibility to innovate based on new methods and techniques for the medical field,” adds Marnix Bügel, board member of exquAIro.

“Lastly, it offer the opportunity for exquAIro the strengthen her education curriculum with new breakthrough applications such as Bayesian Network modelling of genetics in the field of Asthma and AI guided 3D modelling of the right ventricle of the heart to diagnose cardiovascular diseases with children,” says Marnix Bugel. “It is amazing to see how their dedication and curiosity contribute to groundbreaking research, new AI methods for the medical field while simultaneously advancing their own academic development.”
